A key resource for THLH is our dialogue kindling prompts. They help get children talking about complex topics. It is a great way to build skills in critical thinking, reflection and communication, while developing wider understanding of a topic and shaping their values. A wide selection of prompts can be found in our Member Hub.
When trying to spark conversation, don’t worry if it falls flat. Sometimes, just like adults, children are just not in the mood. But, keep trying!

When I was growing up, my extended family would come together over the holidays. We often had complex conversations over the dinner table. A topic was brought up, usually by my grandfather. Gradually more and more people joined in the conversation with their opinions and experiences. My grandfather usually jumped to introduce an alternative, controversial perspective, which opened up the dialogue more. As the youngest, I listened at first but over the years became more confident to participate. While we didn’t solve the world’s problems, these discussions brought about many valuable insights, helped us practice communication skills, and develop key values.
Upon reflection, these were incredible parts of my learning journey, helping me understand the complexities of the world and how to have respectful conversations that build perspective.
A few key tips to help you initiate a deep thinking conversation:
Choose a complex topic with which your child(ren) will connect
Be natural in your approach
Have ideas and other questions to add in to help engage
Have another adult with you who can help hold the conversation
Invite participation, don’t push it. We learn a lot from listening
Add in controversial perspectives to open new lines of dialogue
